North Carolina Budget Battle: House Approves Generous Plan, Senate Wants to Trim

North Carolina's lawmakers are wrestling with how to spend state money for the next year. The House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, passed a budget bill on Wednesday that includes significant increases in several areas.

House Budget Highlights:

  • School Vouchers: The House plan allocates a large amount of money to expand the Opportunity Scholarship program, which provides public funds for students to attend private schools. This would eliminate waiting lists and allow more students to use vouchers.
  • Teacher and Worker Pay: The House budget proposes raising wages for teachers and other state employees beyond previously planned increases.
  • Child Care Funding: The plan provides additional money to support child care centers.

House vs. Senate:

While the House approved their budget, it faces an uncertain future in the Senate. Senate leaders, also Republicans, prefer a leaner spending plan. They've proposed a $31.4 billion budget compared to the House's $31.7 billion. Additionally, the Senate is hesitant to tap into special reserve funds.

One Point of Agreement:

Despite their differences, both the House and Senate agree on allocating nearly $487 million to support school vouchers. This would eliminate waiting lists and permanently increase funding for the program.

Key Points in Simpler Terms:

  • The House of Representatives passed a budget that spends more money on education, including school vouchers, and raises wages for state employees.
  • The Senate wants to spend less and avoid using special savings accounts.
  • Both sides agree to increase funding for school vouchers.
